It was a headline-grabbing move as the midfielder had racke up nearly 200 appearances for the Blues before switching to one of their Premier League rivals.

However, Mount has made little impact since making the switch, badly hampere by a string of injuries which begun shortly after his arrival.

The 26-year-old has made just nine Premier League starts since the start of the 2023/24 season, with 33 appearances in total across all competitions.

Those 33 outings have produce a solitary goal, coming against Brentford in the Premier League in March last year.

Mount is currently out with a hamstring injury, but is returning to training and is expecte to play again in the near future, having not appeare since December 15 when United beat Manchester City and he limpe out of the contest after just 14 minutes.

Amorim is ‘desperate to keep him fit’ as he sees Mount as perfect for his system.

The Red Devils boss employs a system which deploys two No.10s behind a striker and he reckons Mount is ideal for one of those two slots.

The Portsmouth-born star has had precious little chance to prove his manager right but will hope to do so before the end of the season.

Amorim did make his feelings on Mount clear when he took the job in Manchester. saying in November: ‘Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid.

‘You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. This is the most important thing.

‘He playe in this system, so it’s perfect for him… I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!’

After his latest injury setback against City, the manager said: ‘He fits our style. He’s a very good player inside and also outside the pitch. The type of character we want in this team and the club want.

United host Real Sociedad in the second leg of their Europa League last 16 tie on Thursday at Old Trafford.

While Mount is back in training this week he will not be involve in that contest as the Red Devils look to rescue some sort of success from their nightmare season.

The first leg finish 1-1 in Spain so the tie is very much in the balance, with United only boasting one win in their last six outings, which came against Ipswich in the Premier League.
